RESUMEN

Urolithiasis is a prevalent urological disorder that contributes significantly to global morbidity. This study aimed to assess the anti-urolithic effects of Cymbopogon proximus (Halfa Bar) and Petroselinum crispum (parsley) seed ethanolic extract /Gum Arabic (GA) emulsion, and its nanogel form against ethylene glycol (EG) and ammonium chloride (AC)-induced experimental urolithiasis in rats. Rats were divided into four groups: group 1 served as the normal control, group 2 received EG with AC in drinking water for 14 days to induce urolithiasis, groups 3 and 4 were orally administered emulsion (600 mg/kg/day) and nanogel emulsion (600 mg/kg/day) for 7 days, followed by co-administration with EG and AC in drinking water for 14 days. Urolithiatic rats exhibited a significant decrease in urinary excreted magnesium, and non-enzymic antioxidant glutathione and catalase activity. Moreover, they showed an increase in oxalate crystal numbers and various urolithiasis promoters, including excreted calcium, oxalate, phosphate, and uric acid. Renal function parameters and lipid peroxidation were intensified. Treatment with either emulsion or nanogel emulsion significantly elevated urolithiasis inhibitors, excreted magnesium, glutathione levels, and catalase activities. Reduced oxalate crystal numbers, urolithiasis promoters' excretion, renal function parameters, and lipid peroxidation while improving histopathological changes. Moreover, it decreased renal crystal deposition score and the expression of Tumer necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and cleaved caspase-3. Notably, nanogel emulsion showed superior effects compared to the emulsion. Cymbopogon proximus (C. proximus) and Petroselinum crispum (P. crispum) seed ethanolic extracts/GA nanogel emulsion demonstrated protective effects against ethylene glycol induced renal stones by mitigating kidney dysfunction, oxalate crystal formation, and histological alterations.

RESUMEN

The design cement mix of grade 350 was created in accordance with Egyptian Standards by partially substituting the fine aggregate with WPVC waste in various weight percentages (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 75, and 100%). A control mix with 0% replacement was also prepared. The W/C ratio was about 0.5 for all mixes. Compressive, flexure strength, bulk density, and absorption tests were studied. For WPVC replacement, until 30%, compressive strength and flexure strength are acceptable with respect to standerds. Thermal treatment at 200 °C improves the compressive strength, flexure strength and water absorption for 20% WPVC only. The dielectric properties of all cement paste mixes before and after heat treatment, over a frequency range (0.1-106 Hz), were measured as a function of frequency. For dielectric properties and conductivity, an improvement was obtained until 30% WPVC. After this percentage, the dielectric properties and the conductivity got worse. So, cement paste with 30% WPVC as replacement of sand is the optimum ratio with conductivity in range of 10-12 S/cm, which is a good choice for antistatic cement paste applications (10-10-10-12 S/cm). The antimicrobial efficacy of the prepared cement samples of WPVC concentrations (0, 20 and 30) % were studied, the number of grown microbial colonies decreased for all the samples compared to control tap water and decreased by introducing WPVC into the cement paste sample. So, it is recommended to use these samples in places that should be carefully shielded from bacterial infections and static electric charge dangers.

RESUMEN

Chitosan is a natural biodegradable biopolymer that has drawbacks in mechanical and antibacterial properties, limiting its usage in biological and medicinal fields. Chitosan is combined with other naturally occurring substances possessing biological antibacterial qualities in order to broaden its application. Ethanolic apricot kernel seed extract was prepared, analyzed, and incorporated into chitosan film with different concentrations (0.25, 0.5, and 0.75 wt%). Furthermore, the effect of AKSE and γ-radiation (20 Gy and 20 kGy) on the physical properties of the film was studied. The prepared films were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), which revealed that AKSE did not cause any change in the molecular structure, whereas the γ-irradiation dose caused a decrease in the peak intensity of all concentrations except 0.75 wt%, which was the most resistant. In addition, their dielectric, optical, and antimicrobial properties were studied. Also, AKSE-enhanced optical qualities, allowed them to fully block light transmission at wavelengths of 450-600 nm. The dielectric properties, i.e., permittivity (ε'), dielectric loss (ε''), and electrical conductivity (σ), increased with increasing AKSE concentration and film irradiation. The antimicrobial studies revealed that the antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli and Canodida albicans increased with AKSE incorporation.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To assess the role of 18F-FDG PET/CT in initial staging of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma and its impact on changing the management compared to other conventional methods. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A prospective study of 31 patients (21 male and 10 female), mean age 49.3 ± 12.1 years with histologically confirmed squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (nasopharynx was the commonest cancer in 15 patients (48.4%), poorly differentiated grade represented 64.5% of all tumors. Initial staging was achieved according to routine physical examination, endoscopy, CT, U/S, MRI. RESULTS: The overall change in TNM staging by 18F-FDG PET/CT in relation to conventional methods was encountered in 15/31 patients (48.4%). PET/CT changed; T staging in three patients (9.6%), upstaging in two patients and downstaging in one patient. PET/CT upstaged all 13/31 patients in N staging (41.9%). 18F-FDG PET/CT changed; M staging in 3/31 (9.6%) patients, upstaging in two and downstaging in one patient. PET/CT results caused radiotherapy modification in 21/31 patients (67.7%). PET/CT detected intra-parotid nodule in four patients, so additional radiation was added to the parotid in the treatment field. Retropharyngeal nodes were detected by PET/CT in three patients that were missed by conventional imaging. 18F-FDG PET/CT detected two patients of thyroid papillary carcinoma and one case of sigmoid neoplasm confirmed by histopathology. CONCLUSION: 18F-FDG-PET/CT is considered a valuable diagnostic test in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma at initial assessment which would change staging and radiotherapy planning and hence proper management.
